Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a term for refined wood pulp. It has applications as a texturizer, an anti-caking agent, a fat substitute, an emulsifier, an extender, and a bulking agent in food production. [1] The most common form is used in vitamin supplements or tablets.

The composition of MCC has glucose units connected by a 1-4 beta glycosidic bond and considered to be naturally occurring polymer. These linear cellulose chains bundled together as microfibril spiraled together in the walls of the plant cell. Each microfibril exhibits a high degree of three-dimensional internal bonding resulting in a crystalline structure that is insoluble in water and resistant to reagents. There are, however, relatively weak segments of the microfibril with weaker internal bonding. These are called amorphous regions; some argue that they are more accurately called dislocations because of the single-phase structure of microfibrils. The crystalline region is isolated to produce microcrystalline cellulose.

  • Microcrystalline Cellulose & Mannitol: This typically contains 90% MCC and 10% mannitol but can tailor to meet customer requirements. This co-processing enhances the synergistic functionality of the tablet. We spray dry to ensure product uniformity.

  • Microcrystalline Cellulose & Colloidal Silicon dioxide:  This combination is made up of 98% MCC and 2% silicon dioxide colloidal, optimizes the properties of compaction and flow, allowing high stability and dust-free handling. Wet granulation is also more resistant and insoluble in water.

  • Microcrystalline Cellulose & Lactose Monohydrate: The product is a co-processed product with 25% MCC and 75% monohydrate lactose, suitable for compaction mechanisms for brittle fracture and plastic deformation and has high flowability, improved consistency, and smooth surface tablets. It is ideal for formulations with low doses requiring uniformity of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API).
